A New Super Hero Among Us

Summer is here and Nolan needs a hat for his fair face.

Nolan likes to use his sign language.
There are times he runs through every sign he has learned.
This is "So big."  It is his final demonstration and should be followed by applause.

Gramma wants to wear pajamas like this.
I just love the pajamas they make for children.
They make you want to pick up the child and hug him until you both giggle.

Time to go home.
Maybe they won't notice I still have Gramma's toy.

Be sure to put that toy where I can find it the next time.

Nolan doesn't need a blanket to play peek-a-boo anymore.

"Now is the appropriate time to clap.
Do you want to see me do it again?"

It's faster than a speeding bullet.
It's Superboy!

Nolan doesn't usually like his hands touched.
I think he finds it restricting.
He made an exception, when he realized he can go down the steps like a big boy,
if he has a pair of helping hands.

His experimentation went on and on; up and down.
Then forward and backward.
I hope someday he practices his piano with the same thoroughness.

Seeing Grampa in his fedora is a good motivator for Nolan to wear his hat.

"Us men have to do our outside work.
Lead the way Grampa.  Think of me as your shadow."

"What are we going to water first, Grampa."

Nolan observed Grampa filling the watering can with the garden hose.
Grampa thought Nolan might enjoy squeezing the hose to release the water left in the hose,
when it was turned off.  Nolan took the hose from him and put it into the watering can,
before sparying the water.

Another wagon ride.
We met a dog, two children and a school bus.
Nathan and Andrew used to like to get out of the wagon.
Nolan doesn't want it to stop.

This is sign language for more.
He does it immediately if Grampa pauses.

Grampa makes Nolan gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free zucchini bread.
To keep it from spoiling his dinner, he places it on a plate with a napkin covering it.
Nolan saw the plate coming with the napkin on it and quickly started signing, "More, please."

Superboy and his Grampa stop to enjoy the view.

We're in the home stretch of our excursion.

We were putting away the wagon.
Nolan assumed we were just switching vehicles.

Let's go again in my coupe now.

California Vacation Day 2
The Birthday Party

We started our morning at the Farmer's market.
This is Lemo, who plays his guitar left-handed but has it strung right-handed.
It gives him a unique Jamaican sound.
All of his chords and arpeggios run from the top to the bottom.
He told us the biggest problem is, he has to be careful not to run out of low notes.
You can always play higher notes my moving up the neck, but there's a finite number of low notes.

The boys were glad Mommy and Gramma had pennies for the fountain at the Farmers' market.

The boys enjoy tasting the fruits and vegetables.  It's a wonderful marketing strategy.
You also realize what pride the growers have in their products.
There's something very special about seeing the face and shaking the hand
that grew what you're eating for dinner that night.

Andrew's Thomas the Tank wellie needed some repair.

Grampa, who is experienced at sewing shoes together, while on vacation,
took out the needle and thread we had brought with us and "put it together, again."

Ryan Joseph is resting up for the festivities.
Bogie keeps guard as he sleeps.

It's a super hero party.  I don't know why the sign doesn't say Clark and Bruce.

On the way to the party, which was held a month after their actual birthday,
so that Gramma and Grampa could attend, Andrew asked, "So are we five, now?"

We all felt as if we looked like this at the end of the party.

Nathan considers carefully before heading down a steep slope in the obstacle course.

Things get a little clogged as we wait for courage to enter.

That's one slippery slope.
And once you're at the bottom, you have to climb out.

Gramma chose not to experience this adventure.
I'm not certain what high heels would do to an obstacle course built on air.

Amazing that they could actually play basketball,
with the floor bouncing.

Andrew even made a basket.

Unfortunately, the birthday boy's face met with another skull.
The swollen black eye was proof that even super heroes have rough days.
Despite the injury, Andrew tried to reassure all of us that it was still fun.

King for the Day.

Co-King for the Day.

Yikes, there's a spider on that cake!

The mask makes the black eye less noticeable.

Gramma observed Nathan being very sweet to a young lady at the party.
He led her up the bouncy slide and encouraged her to come down with him.
After he reached the bottom and realized she was still at the top,
he called to her and waited until she got the courage to slide down.
The next trip down the slide, he sat next to her and made sure she sent down at the same time.
The third trip down, he held her hand as she came down.
From the bouncy slide he helped her find the entrance to the obstacle course.

I checked with Nathan's parents to see who the little girl was that was getting such special attention.
Neither of them knew her name.
When I asked Nathan who his friend was, he responded, "I forget."

I shared the story with Grampa, who pulled out his phone
and started flipping through pictures on it.
"Is it this one?" he asked.
I took a look at the picture of Nathan holding hands with a little girl, on his phone.
"No, that's a different one," I said.

He's just a very sweet, helpful guy.

Opening presents with Super Grampa.

Super Grampa's special power is a lot of hot air.
